Repaired units are finished with a very strong and durable coating that protects electronic parts for the influence of extreme weather circumstances.
Always send a clear description of malfunction together with the suspicious electronic part. In this case Carmo electronics guarantees testing, repairing and sending back the unit within 3 days.
Benefits
The main benefit of repairing a unit in contrast with buying a more expensive new one is an indication of the possible cause on the bike that appears from the broken electronic parts. Even if the malfunction is not in the ignition unit, but elsewhere in the electronic system. This information is supplied totally free of charge together with the repaired unit. This way you are able to replace the defective parts in the electrical system of the motorcycle and prevent the unit breaking again. This saves a lot of time and a great deal of unnecessary expense.
Repairing ignition systems of almost any kind of motorcycle is possible, also the so-called potted units. Hard potted units can only be tested. The measure of hardness can be judged by putting a fingernail in the potting. If a mark remains the unit is potted with a soft material that makes repairing possible.
Ad 2. Universal replacement ignition systems
It is not always possible to repair an ignition unit reliable. For example, irreparable damage on a printed circuit board due to burned out electronic parts. Also potted ignition units with a hard material are not repairable. In those cases Carmo electronics can offer a digital replacement ignition. Test / Repair Form
How long is the warranty on ignition systems manufactured by Carmo?
Our digital ignition systems come with 3 years warranty. Production errors, quality issues and internal problems are covered by this warranty.
The Carmo digital ignition systems are protected against high voltage peaks, defective HT coils and reverse battery connection.
This protection means that the Carmo digital ignition will not be damaged immediately in case of faulty electronics in your motorcycle.
Long term use of a motorcycle with faulty electronics may still result in damage to the Carmo digital ignition system.
This means that without solving the electrical issue the Carmo digital ignition could break down after a while.
If research shows that your Carmo digital ignition was damaged by faulty electrical parts, the warranty rights will not be valid.
If this situation occurs we will attempt to repair your ignition system in order to keep the costs as low as possible.
If the system is beyond repair a new product will be offered at a reduced price.
In all cases we will try our best to offer an acceptable solution.
Testing your original ignition module is free of charge when purchasing one of our replacement systems.
During the test we are often able to find out what caused your original module to break down.
This way you will know for sure if your original module really needs replacement, and you’ll be able to solve other electrical issues that may not be known yet.

The LCD in my dashboard is not functioning, can this be repaired?
A faulty LCD can be caused by 2 different problems.
Cause
1. The LCD itself is defective (sometimes recognized by black spots or cracks in LCD).
2. Components in the dashboard that control the LCD are defective.
Solution
1. Broken LCD's cannot be repaired. Unfortunately we are unably to supply new LCD's. If the LCD itself is broken you can look for a second (used) similar dashboard.
We can use the LCD of the second dashboard and replace the broken LCD. Or we can copy the data of your broken dashboard, and program this in the second one.
2. Defective components can usually be replaced, we are most likely to repair your dashboard.
I have replaced some components in my dashboard but it's still not functioning. Can my dashboard still be repaired?
When you have attempted a repair it's usually still possible for us to repair your dashboard. Extra costs may be charged if damage from earlier repairs has to be restored.
My item has been tested and repaired. Do I have to pay for both?
The test charges are included in the repair costs. Test costs are only charged if your item turns out not to be defective, or if you choose not to have the item repaired.
Will my dashboard still remember the mileage after repair?
The memory of your dashboard will not be altered. Your mileage will remain the same after the repair. If the mileage is already incorrect before repair we're able to alter the memory of your dashboard. Please contact us for information and possibilities.
Key service
Can my black key be copied to a red key?
Your black key can only be copied to a new black key. In order to program a red key we also need your ECU and in some cases the antenna ring of your ignition lock. Click HERE for more information about our key service.
I have purchased an original key from my dealer. Can you program this new key?
In most cases it is not possible to program an original key. In order to make a copy of an existing key we use a different type of transponder. Most original keys cannot be opened to swap the transponder. In these cases we must supply one of our own keys.
What do I need to send if I want an extra key?
What you need to send is depending on your current situation. When you just need a copy of your current key we often just need the key, but when you have lost all keys we'll need more parts. Click HERE and select your motorcycle brand to find out all options we offer for your brand. If you click on a specific option you'll be able to see which parts we need.
Will my keys be cut as well?
Carmo only ensures that the keys function correctly electronically. We do not have the equipment to cut the keys. The keys we supply are uncut. You can have the keys cut to the correct shape by a locksmith.
I’ve lost all my keys. How can I get a new key cut now?
There are specialist locksmiths who can make suitable keys for your existing ignition lock, even if you no longer have the original key. Please contact us for more information on this; we can refer you to the relevant service.
Can my immobiliser system be removed?
In some cases it is possible to remove the immobiliser system, depending on your motorcycle brand and model. Please contact us for the specific possibilities.
Batteries
Discharge voltage
The list below shows the voltage levels that indicate how deeply your battery has been discharged:
12.60V 100%
12.50V 90%
12.42V 80%
12.32V 70%
12.20V 60%
12.06V 50%
11.90V 40%
11.75V 30%
11.58V 20%
11.31V 10%
10.50V 0%
These figures apply to almost all lead-acid batteries.
A starter battery may be discharged to 20 per cent, whilst a leisure battery may be discharged to 50 per cent.
A semi-traction battery may be discharged to between 60 and 70 per cent, and a deep-cycle battery may be discharged to between 80 and 90 per cent.
Using this list and a voltmeter, you can check how deeply your battery is discharged. No rights may be derived from this list. For the specific voltage of your battery, please check the battery manual or contact the battery manufacturer.
What causes a flat battery?
In many cases, a flat battery is the cause of ‘wear and tear’ and sometimes a fault resulting from incorrect charging.
The normal service life of a lead-acid battery is 3 to 10 years, depending on the type of battery and its application.
A battery wears out more quickly or becomes faulty due to, amongst other things:
- Over-discharge.
Depending on the model of lead-acid battery, it must never be discharged below 80 per cent. A standard starter battery should only be discharged by a maximum of 20 per cent! Otherwise, its performance will deteriorate significantly, which in almost all cases leads to a faulty battery. The cause could be that you have left your lights on or that there is a leakage current in the electrical circuit. If a battery fails within its normal service life, it is therefore important that you have the vehicle checked for a leakage current. If you do not do this, you risk having another faulty battery within the foreseeable future (which is not covered by the warranty). Another possible cause is that you make a lot of short journeys (the so-called ‘runabout’ car). Starting a vehicle requires a relatively large amount of energy, and the battery then needs a longer period to recharge. Driving short distances only occasionally will not recharge the battery sufficiently. To ensure a long service life, it is important that you recharge the battery regularly using a good battery charger.
- Prolonged inactivity
If you do not use the battery, it will slowly discharge and thus lose capacity. Every battery loses its charge over time; depending on the type of battery, this happens quickly or slowly. The battery will eventually become too deeply discharged (see above). For motorcyclists, this is often caused by the winter break, during which the battery becomes too flat. It is therefore very important that you use a good battery charger or trickle charger, such as the NoCo G1100 (also suitable for lithium batteries)
- Charging voltage that is too high or too low
Every battery must be charged correctly to ensure an optimal service life. If you use a charging voltage that is too high (overcharging), this can even lead to the formation of highly explosive hydrogen gas. Normally, the charging voltage of a lead-acid battery is between 13.6 volts and (at most) 14.8 volts. In this case, the cause may lie with the vehicle’s voltage regulator or alternator. If a battery fails within its normal service life, it is therefore important that you have it checked. If you do not do this, you risk having another faulty battery in the foreseeable future (which is not covered by the warranty).
- Very low or high temperatures
Temperature has a major impact on a battery’s performance and lifespan. If the temperature is ten degrees higher, this can reduce the lifespan by up to 20 per cent. It should be noted, however, that higher temperatures do have a positive effect on capacity. The battery will therefore perform better at a higher temperature but will not last as long. The reverse is also true, which is why a car may refuse to start on a cold winter’s day. The minimum and maximum operating temperatures for a battery are -18 °C to 50 °C.
What do the abbreviations CP/DC/WC stand for?
The abbreviations used for Yuasa batteries are:
WC / Wet Charged: These batteries are filled and charged, and ready for immediate use.
DC / Dry Charged: These batteries are NOT filled; NO acid pack is included with your battery.
CP / Combi Pack: These batteries are NOT filled, but an acid pack IS included with your battery.
What is the warranty on a battery?
Batteries are covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, which is 24 months for most batteries. This warranty covers manufacturing faults, such as a faulty cell or a battery that ‘fails’ whilst starting the vehicle. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.
Damage caused by use, such as a battery being discharged too deeply – which almost always causes a battery to fail – is not covered by the warranty. Consequential damage, such as that caused by a leakage current in the vehicle, is also excluded. Manufacturing faults usually become apparent within the first few months; a battery that fails later on often has a different cause.
Further information: causes of a flat battery and maximum discharge per battery type.
Is your battery faulty? Please contact us at [email protected]. We would like to examine and test the battery. Testing is free of charge, unless the battery turns out not to be faulty, in which case we charge a €7.50 testing fee. In the event of a manufacturing fault, we will make a warranty claim with the manufacturer.
When will my battery be delivered?
Motorcycle batteries are shipped on working days. Orders received before 14:30 (Monday to Friday) are dispatched the same day, if in stock. Delivery time depends on your location and on the carrier.
See our shipping information for more details.
Generator / Stator and Regulator Rectifier
Testing the Dynamo / Stator and Voltage Regulator
Correctly diagnosing your alternator or voltage regulator is vital for preserving the other components in the charging system. Various guides on this subject can be found online, but these do not provide a definitive answer. If you are unable to test an alternator or voltage regulator yourself, you can send it to us for diagnosis.
The voltage regulator I ordered is missing a (black or brown) wire
Some voltage regulators require an additional switched 12V connection to operate. On modern regulators, these connections are often unnecessary. It may therefore be the case that your new voltage regulator has one fewer connection. Check on your motorbike whether the remaining connection is indeed a switched 12V connection. If this is the case, you can simply connect and use the voltage regulator.
If the missing connection is not a switched 12V connection, the voltage regulator supplied may not be suitable for your motorbike. In that case, please contact our customer service team before connecting the voltage regulator.
